The first days in Yogya
So I made it here alright. The family of my friend H. is really nice and I can talk to the older daughter in English. The 2 house helpers only speak little bits of English and therefor I have to use gestures and my very poor Indonesian to tell them what I need. I’ve started to keep from eating during the day as this is a muslim family. Due to the heat I can’t quite keep from drinking Water yet but I try to do it very seldom and in my room. There is a little girl (the youngest daughter of my friend H.) who doesn’t need to follow the Ramadan eating/drinking schedule. That makes it a bit easier for the family to accept that I am not quite used to the Ramadan. The sun just went down and while I write this I am eating iced fruit salad. I am not sure what will happen to me if I eat this but I have not had any digestive problems as of now. I am starting to eat more risky things and see what will happen. Today was a very uneventful day. I spent the first part of day with trying to go online with my laptop. When that turned out to be a very unfruitful labor, I gave up on it for the mean time and played some card games with the older daughter. We also did the “Sendung mit der Maus”-puzzle that brought from Germany. I actually had stayed at home to write a blog entry but since I couldn’t get the computer to go online I was pretty upset that I didn’t use the day more wisely. Up till just a few minutes ago when the computer finally made it online I was pretty bored. And now that everybody is back from work and we could eat I sit here trying to upload picture to the blog (Which is taking forever by the way). Maybe the computer is following the Ramadan schedule as well or it would have worked earlier. Oh well. I am sure I will have opportunities with better internet connections soon.
Yesterday I went for a little walk around the neighborhood with the two girls. We went to look at some planes who are shown outside an aircraft museum that is close by. This house is actually very close to Yogya’s airport and you often can hear planes landing and starting. On the way to the aircraft museum I saw several mango trees, banana trees, a starfruit tree and little mimosa plants on the ground. Pretty amazing. Around noon my friend H. and another friend from Germany J. came around and picked me up to go see the city and get a few necessities like a sim-card for my cellphone and a purse and wallet. We went to the biggest touristic street in Yogya: Malioboro. I could have spent all the money I had to go shopping there. But I saw that I would have to get much much better with my Indonesian to be able to bargain like J. did for me. Tomorrow I will meet up with my mentor and with J. so that I can see the UNY buildings where I am going to teach and prepare lessons. I will add some pics now and then leave for tonight as I have to get up early again to eat breakfast with the family. Good night!
